Post-Procedure Care
Endovenous Laser Ablation
Patients who undergo Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLT) procedures for the treatment of varicose veins can expect only a minimal interruption of their daily lives. The following is what you can expect immediately following a procedure and for the days ahead:
The first hour. Your EVLT procedure can last anywhere from 30-90 minutes. Immediately post-procedure we will apply the compression stockings. You will leave as soon as you are dressed. Due to the medication we give you, you will need a driver.
The first day. You will likely experience some mild tenderness and will be prescribed a pain medication if needed. We encourage you to rest and elevate your legs as well as take short walks every couple of hours.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Patients who under go Ambulatory Phlebectomy procedures require approximately 2 days of downtime. You will be off your feet with your leg elevated to minimize bleeding risk. Your leg will be wrapped with a compression bandage that will remain in place until the morning of the third day. You may return to work on the third day.
Sclerotherapy
There is no downtime with this procedure. However, you must wear compression stockings for one week following Sclerotherapy. You need to refrain from running or any heavy aerobic activity for one week. This also includes leg weight-lifting. Restrictions also include swimming or taking baths for one week. You may take a shower the next day. Avoidance of direct sun exposure is also important.
