National Photography Month: Step Outside and See What You Find

May is National Photography Month, and you do not have to be a professional photographer to take part. This month is the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself to slow down, step outside and pay attention to the world around you. All it takes is a short walk and whatever camera you already have in your pocket.

According to the Mayo Clinic, walking is one of the most accessible and beneficial forms of exercise, supporting heart health, circulation and mental wellness. In honor of National Photography Month, we are encouraging a simple challenge: take a short walk outside each day and capture one photo of something that catches your eye. It does not have to be anything extraordinary. A flower, a shadow, a neighbor's front porch or a tree you have walked past a hundred times without noticing can all make for a meaningful image.

The challenge is designed to be low-pressure and flexible. Lace up your shoes, step outside and bring your phone. Each walk does not have to be long. Even 10 to 15 minutes in your neighborhood, a local park or your own backyard counts. The goal is not a perfect photo. It’s simply to get moving and notice something new each day. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of it.

Go at different times of day.

Morning light and late afternoon golden-hour light look completely different. Try varying when you head outside to see your surroundings in a fresh way.

Look for small details.

A flower pushing through a sidewalk crack, dew on a leaf or a shadow cast across a fence can all make for an interesting photo. The most ordinary moments are often the most rewarding to capture.

Leave the earbuds at home.

Use the time to be fully present. Noticing sounds, textures and smells around you is a form of mindful movement that can help reduce stress and support mental well-being, both of which are important parts of overall health.

Walk with someone.

Invite a neighbor, friend or family member to join you. Shared walks add connection and can make the habit easier to sustain throughout the month.

Walking regularly also supports healthy circulation and leg health, making this challenge good for your body as well as your mindset.
